Why You Should Start a Patio Garden

I have plenty of indoor plants but I am always inspired by the outdoor gardens in my neighborhood. Now that my new apartment has a rather large patio space, I decided it was time to start a little garden of my own. Currently, I have two large raised planter boxes and a few potted plants. The patio space is covered with another balcony above it, so at first I was worried about the plants not getting enough light. However they seem to be thriving!

I have one box with cherry tomatoes, hot peppers, rosemary, and green onions. The cherry tomato plant has definitely taken over this box. But it has provided my boyfriend and I with lots of tomatoes. I have made a pasta dish and delicious bruschetta so far, and there are still many unripe tomatoes on the way! The green onions are always so convenient whenever we are cooking, as we can snip a few from the garden and they continually grow. With the cost of groceries these days, saving a bit of money on food is always welcome in our household.

My small but cozy patio garden!

The second garden box on our patio has dahlias, moss roses, and a flowering succulent plant (specific name I am unsure of). They provide a lot of color and have been awesome to harvest flowers from. I have been experimenting with flower drying and resin projects for my Etsy store.

Overall, what started as a dip into gardening has proved more than worth it. As someone who hasn’t really had an outdoor garden before I was surprised with how easy and rewarding it has been.
